The Oonai Valley, located in the Chichibu Mountains of Saitama Prefecture, is surrounded by dense forests and is truly a hidden gem. This valley is well-known, and you can see waterfalls by crossing a massive suspension bridge.
In addition to the beauty of fresh greenery and autumn leaves, the main attraction is the "Oonai Ice Pillars," held annually from mid-January to late February. Local volunteers personally construct enormous ice pillars that are 250 meters wide and reach heights of 60 meters, acclaimed as one of the "Three Great Ice Pillars of Chichibu." As a representative winter landscape, many television and magazine media report on this event, attracting numerous visitors each year. There will also be a limited-time lighting event, where the illuminated ice pillars floating in the light, combined with the suspension bridge, create a dreamy and mysterious atmosphere, making one forget the cold. Additionally, during the event, free Japanese amazake is offered, and visitors can enjoy warm local cuisine at a small shop run by local residents. The grand beauty of the ice pillars showcased in the tranquil mountains is a winter-only spectacle that is highly recommended.
