About Onuma Quasi-National Park
It is the only national park in southern Hokkaido where you can see the unique flora and fauna of Hokkaido.
Details
Lake Onuma National Park was designated as Japan's 13th national park in July 1958 and is the only national park in southern Hokkaido. It is located in the central part of the Oshima Peninsula, about a 20-minute drive from the Hokkaido Shinkansen Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station. The park encompasses the active volcano Komagatake and lakes formed by volcanic eruptions, such as Lake Onuma, Lake Konuma, and Suigen-numa, along with lush green areas nearby. The unique shape of Komagatake makes it a well-known active volcano in southern Hokkaido, covering a total area of 9,083 hectares with magnificent and diverse landscapes.
Additionally, Lake Onuma, formed by repeated volcanic eruptions, is situated within a verdant forest, allowing visitors to see unique flora and fauna native to Hokkaido. The dreamlike atmosphere created by the reflection of Komagatake on the lake's surface allows one to feel the power of nature. Recently, with the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen route to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station, the area has gained attention as a conveniently accessible tourist destination.
Highlights
