About Oshinkoshin Waterfall (Shuangmei Waterfall)

It is one of the eight scenic spots of Shiretoko and the largest waterfall in Shiretoko.

Details

Oshinkoshin Falls is the largest waterfall in the Shiretoko area of Hokkaido. It is known as the "Double Beautiful Falls" because the water flow splits into two along the way, and it has been selected as one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls. The name Oshinkoshin comes from the Ainu language "O-sunku-usi," which means "a waterfall where Ezo spruce trees grow abundantly below the river." Climbing the stairs allows visitors to reach the middle height of the waterfall and enjoy the powerful sight of the cascading water. Additionally, there is an observation deck near the waterfall, offering a panoramic view of the Sea of Okhotsk and the beautiful Shiretoko mountains. During the drift ice season from February to March, one can also see the stunning landscape of the sea covered with drift ice extending to the horizon.

Highlights

With a height difference of about 30 meters, it is the largest waterfall in Shiretoko. It has been selected as one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls. In winter, visitors can enjoy the sight of the waterfall frozen in a flowing state. During the drift ice season, it is also possible to see the drift ice of the Sea of Okhotsk from the observation deck above the waterfall.
