📝 Introduction
Enjoy the famous soba noodles and shaved ice of Ouchi-juku in a thatched-roof house.
📖 Details
Ouchi-juku is a post town that prospered during the Edo period as an important road connecting Aizu and Nikko. Today, there are still over 30 thatched-roof houses that perfectly preserve the landscape of the Edo period. Located almost in the center of Ouchi-juku, "Yamagataya" is a restaurant and souvenir shop that sells soba noodles, shaved ice, and rice crackers.
The most popular dish in the restaurant is the famous "Street Radish Grated Soba" from Ouchi-juku. This local delicacy is eaten using the green onions provided with the meal instead of chopsticks, and diners take a bite of the green onion as a condiment to enhance the flavor. Another well-known dish at the shop is the shaved ice, available only in summer, made with natural ice from Nikko. The fluffy shaved ice is drizzled with a generous amount of fruit syrup, with flavors such as "Tochiotome" and "Yamabudo" available.
A wide variety of packaged souvenirs, such as soy sauce, coarse sugar, and chili peppers, are also quite popular.
