About Rock Cave Lake
Known as Japan's most beautiful man-made lake, it allows for ice fishing of whitefish.
Details
Iwadon Lake is a reservoir lake built in 1961 during the construction of the "Iwadon Dam." Surrounded by birch and red pine trees, it boasts a mysterious atmosphere and is known for its charming scenery, often referred to as "the most beautiful artificial lake in Japan."
As the seasons change, the broadleaf forest transforms into lush greenery or vibrant autumn leaves. The area features camping sites, plazas, and walking trails. At an elevation of 700 meters, the cool climate allows visitors to enjoy a pleasant stroll while admiring water plants, lilies of the valley, and rhododendrons from spring to early summer, making it a very comfortable and enjoyable natural park.
Notably, winter fishing for char is a unique activity in the area. Anglers drill holes in the frozen lake surface and drop their lines into the holes to catch char, attracting many fishing enthusiasts and families during the winter months to enjoy the sport.
On the eastern shore of the lake, there is the "Iwadon Lake Resthouse," which not only sells fishing permits for Iwadon Lake but also offers dishes made with "Yamabuki garlic," such as Yamabuki garlic miso ramen and handmade soba noodles. Fishing gear rentals are available, and diners can enjoy the service of having their caught char cooked for them.
