About Roi (Fuchu City Local Forest Museum)

The special structure spiraling like a snail is a restored water well relic from the Heian period.

Details

The "Fuchu City Local Forest Museum," covering an area of 140,000 square meters, introduces the history, nature, and unique characteristics of Fuchu. In one corner of the museum, there is a restored giant well known as "Roi" (螺井). This ancient well, excavated from the historical town of Kokka, has a uniquely spiraled structure leading to the water collection area. Due to its distinctive shape, it is nicknamed "Roi," which means "snail" in Japanese. The current well is a reconstruction based on the remains excavated from the Heian period. Additionally, "Roi" wells are often found in environments below the groundwater level, distributed in areas such as Musashino and the Izu Islands, and some regions continued to use them until the 30th year of the Shōwa era (1955-1964). The "Fuchu City Local Forest Museum" also features other noteworthy exhibits, with the permanent exhibition hall showcasing many valuable materials. The planetarium (which requires an additional admission fee) is also quite popular, making it a highly regarded destination for a fun and educational day.
