About Sagano Bamboo Grove (Arashiyama Bamboo Grove)
The lush path covered by the green bamboo forest represents a landmark attraction in Kyoto.
Details
Sagano has been cherished by nobles and literati since the Heian period due to its beautiful scenery. As a result, many villas and cottages have been built in Sagano. The Sagano Bamboo Grove Path stretches from Nonomiya Shrine through the northern gate of Tenryu-ji Temple and extends to Okochi Sanso, covering approximately 400 meters. It is known as the "Arashiyama Bamboo Grove Path."
The beautiful sight of lush green bamboo rising straight into the sky often appears on travel magazines, television dramas, and advertisement covers, making it a representative landscape of Kyoto. The bamboo, extending straight upward from the ground, tilts inward as it grows, forming an elegant bamboo tunnel. The scenery of dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves and the gentle sound of swaying bamboo in the wind create a leisurely atmosphere on this picturesque path, allowing visitors to experience a sense of the extraordinary. In particular, the gentle slope from the northern gate of Tenryu-ji to Okochi Sanso, which offers a view of the bamboo grove, is a popular photography spot.
In addition to strolling, the Sagano Bamboo Grove Path features a human-powered rickshaw lane without walls, making it highly recommended to explore the path by rickshaw. Furthermore, the "Kyoto Arashiyama Hanatouro," held every December, illuminates the entire bamboo grove area, allowing visitors to enjoy the bamboo's elegant beauty in a different light. At the same time, nearby temples and shrines also hold special worship events, making it convenient to visit them as well.
Highlights
Known for its picturesque scenery, Kyoto's representative attraction features paths surrounded by tens of thousands of densely growing bamboo. Every December, the "Kyoto Arashiyama Hanatouro" lighting event is held.
