📜 Content

In Japan's oldest historical text, the "Nihon Shoki," and the oldest collection of Japanese poetry, the "Man'yōshū," there are records of Emperor Saimei and Empress Jitō bathing in the Sakiyu Onsen (at that time known as "Muro Onsen"). Later, Sakiyu Onsen gained increasing popularity among the imperial family and nobility, gradually becoming a must-visit resting place on the way to worship at the Kumano Sanzan while passing through Wakayama Prefecture. In addition to its proud historical background, the excellent quality of the hot spring water at Sakiyu Onsen is also worth noting. The onsen draws sodium chloride spring water directly from the source, which is colorless and transparent. It is said to be beneficial for neuralgia, joint pain, chronic skin diseases, and gynecological issues. The unique geographical location on rocky shores by the Pacific Ocean adds to the charm of Sakiyu Onsen. Visitors can soak in the open-air hot springs while enjoying the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Waves crash against the rocks, creating white foam that occasionally splashes on the face, refreshing the spirit. The onsen, built in grooves formed by rocks eroded by seawater, retains the charm of ancient times, allowing guests to experience the joy of bathing in a setting filled with primitive wildness. Currently, Sakiyu Onsen only offers open-air baths, and towels are available for purchase inside the onsen (200 yen), making it easy to visit even if you arrive empty-handed. If you are visiting the Nanki Shirahama area, it is highly recommended to experience the charm of the seaside onsen during your trip.
