About Sanada Residence
The Edo period palace architecture that has been passed down to the present day is designated as a national historic site.
Details
The Sanada Residence was built by the ninth lord of the domain, Sanada Yukinori, as a residence for his adoptive mother, Teimatsu-in. It was originally called the "Shin Goten" (New Palace) and served as Yukinori's home after his retirement. This precious building, which retains the architectural style of the Edo period with its main house, front gate, storehouse, and garden, has been designated as a national historic site alongside Matsushiro Castle.
The main entrance features a spacious platform used during the Edo period exclusively by the domain lord and guests, designed to separate the workspace from private living areas, with sliding doors (sugi-do) that reflect the dual functionality of the palace architecture.
The garden, designed to showcase different views with the changing seasons, is also a must-see. It employs the "borrowed scenery" technique, allowing visitors to enjoy the surrounding mountain forest landscape from inside the house. Additionally, the pond in the garden is fed by a waterway known for its "spring water," flowing from upstream households down to the moat of Matsushiro Castle.
Moreover, there are seven storehouses arranged as if encircling the residence, one of which has been converted into a workshop for experiential activities, hosting a variety of events periodically.
