About Sancho Onsen
One of the world's rare radon hot springs, it is also the first hot spring recognized as a Japanese heritage site.
Details
Sancho Onsen contains a high concentration of radon and is one of the few radioactive hot springs in the world. It is also the first hot spring town recognized as a Japanese heritage site. According to legend, during the late Heian period (794–1185 AD), a retainer of Minamoto no Yoshiie, Okubo Samayasu, spared the life of a white wolf while on his way to worship at Mount Mitoku. In gratitude for his mercy, the white wolf led him to a place where hot springs emerged. Locally, there is a saying that "bathing in this hot spring for three consecutive mornings can cure all ailments," which is also the origin of the name Sancho Onsen.
Along the banks of the Sancho River, many elegantly styled ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) stand, interspersed with various shops such as confectioneries, sake cellars, and cafes, creating a nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of its past as a healing retreat. The promenade from Sancho Bridge to Kazukabashi Bridge is a famous spot for viewing fireflies in early June.
Under the Aoi Mikage stone Sancho Bridge, there is a mixed-gender outdoor hot spring called "Kawara Buro," which symbolizes Sancho Onsen and is free to use. Additionally, there are two public baths that draw directly from the spring source, four foot baths, and three drinking water stations. The spring water at Sancho Onsen's "drinking water station" is potable and is said to have therapeutic effects for gastrointestinal issues and other ailments.
