About Seikyo-an
The majority of the works collected in the "Shin Kokin Wakashū" are by the poet Saigyō, who lived in a small grass hut in Yoshino.
Details
Saigyō is the poet with the most poems included in the "Shinkokin Wakashū," totaling 94. It is said that towards the end of the Heian period, he abandoned his samurai status to become a monk, settling in Yoshino Mountain for about three years of practice.
Saigyō-an is located deep in the Oku-Senbon area. Follow the Ōmine Okuzudō path towards Kumano, heading towards the Kinpu Shrine. Walk along the stone path next to the Kinpu Shrine, and at the fork, turn left and walk down to the plaza, which is Saigyō-an. The area around the hermitage is quite tranquil, making it no wonder that Saigyō could focus so deeply on creating his waka. However, during the cherry blossom season in spring and the maple season in autumn, a large influx of tourists arrives. In addition to the statue of Saigyō enshrined inside the hermitage, there is also a stone monument outside dedicated to Matsuo Bashō, who visited twice to pay his respects to Saigyō.
It takes about 20 minutes to walk from Kinpu Shrine, with some sections being uneven and potentially slippery in rainy weather, so it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes. The plaza features a gazebo where visitors can take a break during their walk or enjoy a bento.
Highlights
The small hermitage where the monk Saigyo resided during his time of practice in Yoshino. Many visitors come during the beautiful cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. Outside the hermitage stands a monument inscribed with a poem by Matsuo Basho. Next to the hermitage is a pavilion for resting while taking a walk.
