About Sendai Marine Forest Aquarium
The largest aquarium in the Tohoku region.
Details
Sendai Ocean Forest Aquarium, located near Sendai Port, is the largest aquarium in the Tohoku region of Japan. It opened in 2015 as a "symbol of recovery." The aquarium showcases a variety of animals, including species from the Sanriku sea and around the world. The "Sea of Shining Life" at the entrance features a massive tank that is 14 meters wide and 7.5 meters high, extending up to the second floor. Designed with the Sanriku ocean as its concept, it houses around 50 species and approximately 30,000 creatures swimming gracefully within. The dolphin, sea lion, and bird shows held in the "Marine Forest Arena," which can accommodate about 1,000 people, are also very popular.
Sendai Ocean Forest Aquarium is also known for its commitment to breeding the Sawshark, which is captured in the Sanriku sea. Sawsharks are commonly found in warm waters around the world and are a primary ingredient for fish cakes and shark fins. Breeding Sawsharks is quite challenging, and the aquarium holds an impressive record of 873 days, the longest in Japan.
From the nearest station, "Nakano Sakae," there is a shuttle bus that runs every 30 minutes. Please check the official website for the schedule.
Highlights
The huge aquarium extending to the second floor and the spectacular performance show are not to be missed. In addition to marine life, you can also take close-up photos of Japanese squirrels. You can take a shuttle bus from the nearest station to get there.
