About Shibamata Taishakuten Approach

The story setting of director Yamada Yoji's film "The Toughest Man in the World" captures the romantic charm of Tokyo's old streets at important cultural landmarks designated by the government.

Details

The Shibamata area in Katsushika Ward, Tokyo, has been designated by the Japanese government as one of the representative tourist attractions of Japan. Among them, the Shibamata Taishakuten approach is one of the shopping streets that best embodies the charm of old Tokyo. Additionally, Shibamata Taishakuten is known as the hometown of the protagonist Torajiro from the film "Tora-san" by the Japanese film master Yamada Yoji. There are many attractions worth visiting around the shopping street. For example, the "Katsushika Shibamata Torajiro Memorial Hall" and the "Yamada Yoji Museum," which make you feel as if you have stepped into the world of the movies; the Japanese garden "Yamamoto-tei," which has been expanded several times from the late Taisho period to the early Showa period; and the landmark of Shibamata, "Shibamata Taishakuten Daikyoji Temple," among others. The "Koshin no Hi" is the auspicious day for Shibamata Taishakuten, held every 60 days. Since the Edo period, there has been a traditional ritual called "Yoi Koshin" held on the eve of Koshin no Hi. During the ritual, people parade along the Taishakuten approach while waving decorated bamboo poles called "machi," creating a lively scene. Additionally, large lanterns inscribed with "Koshin" are hung in front of the Ni-tenmon gate of Shibamata Taishakuten, adding an elegant atmosphere to the neighborhood.
