About Shikina-en Garden
The largest villa of the royal family preserves the prosperous past of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
Details
Established by the Second Shō Dynasty of the Ryukyu Kingdom, it was completed in 1799 during the reign of the 15th king, Shō On. This is the largest royal villa of the Ryukyu royal family, primarily used for leisure by the royal family and to receive envoys from the Chinese emperor during the investiture ceremonies.
In 1941, it was designated as a national scenic spot, but it was destroyed during the Battle of Okinawa at the end of World War II. After post-war restoration, it was re-designated as a national scenic spot in 1976 and was designated as a national special scenic spot in 2000. In the same year, it was registered as part of the "Ruins of the Ryukyu Kingdom and Related Heritage" as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The garden, designed in the style of a Japanese landscape garden with a pond and strolling path, features the Shinzui Pond, which resembles a scattered heart shape, as its centerpiece. It includes buildings such as the palace, hexagonal hall, and agricultural encouragement platform, as well as stone bridges and inscriptions made from Ryukyu limestone. The unique design of Ryukyu, cleverly integrating elements of Japanese and Chinese garden styles, reflects the characteristics of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which thrived through maritime trade. One can reminisce about the glorious past of the dynasty while enjoying a leisurely stroll like a king.
Highlights
Designated as a national special scenic spot and registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this renowned garden features a unique style intricately woven from Ryukyu, Chinese, Japanese, and East Asian cultures. The garden's winding paths and bridges are made from Ryukyu limestone, which can be slippery, so it is recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes such as sneakers when visiting.
