Known as the "last clear stream of Japan," it is the longest river in Shikoku.
📖 Details
The Shimanto River basin is located in the western part of Kochi Prefecture, with a total length of 196 km, making it the longest river in Shikoku. Its source is Mount Nonyu in Tsuno Town. This area is known as "Japan's last clear stream," where one can enjoy beautiful natural scenery that changes with the seasons.
The Shimanto River has 48 sunken bridges. These bridges do not have railings and are designed to withstand rising river water levels without being washed away. The most famous of these is the longest bridge, the Sada Sink Bridge (今成橋), located at the river's lowest point, with a total length of 291.6 km. Additionally, since this is also the closest sunken bridge to the city of Shimanto, it often attracts many tourists.
