About Shimoze Art Museum
The eight-colored exhibition hall lined up above the pond is itself an art museum of architectural beauty.
Details
The Shimo-se Art Museum opened in March 2023. This seaside building, which offers a view of Miyajima, was designed by architect Shigeru Ban and was selected as one of the "Most Beautiful Museums in the World" by the Versailles Awards in 2024.
The most eye-catching feature is the movable exhibition hall inspired by the Seto Inland Sea islands. Eight exhibition halls are arranged over a pool, with their outer walls covered in colored glass of different shades. The exhibitions include Japanese crafts such as hina dolls and Kyo dolls, as well as Western crafts primarily featuring glass works by Émile Gallé. Additionally, modern art pieces from both Japan and the West are displayed according to various themes. The pyramid-shaped hill within the grounds has a terrace overlooking the Seto Inland Sea and a garden planted with flowers commonly found in Gallé's works, both of which are worth seeing.
Next to the museum, ten villas nestled among the trees and on the pool, also designed by Shigeru Ban, provide a personal space reminiscent of a retreat. Guests can enjoy French cuisine made with local ingredients or take leisurely strolls in the museum.
