🗺️ Shiretoko Pass知床峠

Located at the mountain ridge of National Route 344, which connects Utoru in Shari Town and Rausu Town, the elevation is 738 meters. Directly ahead is Rausu-dake, and below is a lush forest. The stunning view from the pass is listed as one of the "Shiretoko Eight Views." On clear days, you can also see the Nemuro Strait and Kunashir Island in the distance. The winding 27-kilometer road is a popular driving route. Open the car windows to enjoy the gentle breeze and experience the unique natural scenery of Shiretoko Pass. The primeval forest, rich with trees like Mizunara Oak and European Spruce, is a major highlight. In winter, the Shiretoko Cross Road is closed due to several meters of snowfall. It is the only national road in Hokkaido that temporarily suspends traffic and has the shortest traffic period in Japan. Before it opens in spring, a one-day event called "Shiretoko Snow Wall Walk" is held, allowing visitors to enjoy a unique experience walking along the road flanked by towering snow walls.
