⛩️ Shishan Temple

📝 Introduction

The temple standing on the natural monument "Silica" is the place where Murasaki Shikibu drew inspiration for the creation of "The Tale of Genji."

📖 Details

Ishiyamadera is the head temple of the Shingon sect, located on the banks of the Seta River, which flows from Japan's largest lake, Lake Biwa. The temple grounds are dotted with various uniquely shaped rocks, including a massive rock that stands in front of the main hall. This rock is a rare natural monument known as "silica stone." Ishiyamadera derives its name from being built on this giant silica stone. The temple was founded in 747 during the Nara period (710–794) under the imperial decree of Emperor Shomu, by the monk Ryoben. The "Main Hall" of Ishiyamadera is the oldest wooden structure in Shiga Prefecture, housing the statue of the "Nyoirin Kannon," the only secret Buddha that was sealed under the emperor's decree. Additionally, the oldest "Tahoto" pagoda in Japan, donated by Minamoto no Yoritomo, the shogun of the Kamakura shogunate, has also been designated as a national treasure. Important cultural properties such as the "Tsukimi-tei," "Higashi Omon," and "Mikagedo," which are considered the thrones of the emperors following Emperor Go-Shirakawa, are also found within the temple grounds, along with several other precious buildings. During the Heian period (794–1185), a trend emerged among the aristocracy to visit Ishiyamadera, and many female writers also came to pay their respects. Murasaki Shikibu was one of them, and it is said that she gained the inspiration for "The Tale of Genji" while in seclusion at Ishiyamadera. The main hall features the "Genji Room," which preserves items said to have been used by Murasaki Shikibu, including her inkstone and illustrations. The cultural heritage of "Lake Biwa and its Lakeside Scenery—Water Heritage of Wishes and Life" has been recognized as a Japanese heritage site. Ishiyama is also famous for its beautiful autumn foliage, with the scenic view "Ishiyama Akizuki" selected as one of the "Eight Views of Omi." Along the approach to Ishiyamadera, there are several restaurants where visitors can taste local ingredients such as Seta clams, funazushi, and Omi beef, as well as souvenir shops selling local specialties and ryokans. It is worth visiting these places after your pilgrimage.
