About Meigetsu-in Temple (明月院)

Known for its beautiful hydrangeas, this temple is located in the northern part of Kamakura.

Details

Myōboku-in is a temple belonging to the Rinzai sect of the Kenchō-ji School, and its main deity is the Holy Guanyin Bodhisattva. This temple is famous as the "Hydrangea Temple", with approximately 2,500 hydrangea plants. Each June, the blooming hydrangeas turn the temple into a sea of beautiful blue flowers. The unique blue petal color is affectionately referred to by locals as "Myōboku-in Blue." While enjoying the hydrangeas, visitors can also see the blooming Japanese irises in the back garden's iris garden (admission fee required). Myōboku-in is also home to many other types of plants and trees, including Chinese plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, red leaves, and maples, allowing for beautiful views throughout the year. The main hall of the temple features a circular window known as the "Window of Enlightenment." The circle symbolizes sudden realization, truth, and the universe. Through this round window, one can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the back garden. Additionally, the intricately designed and cleverly laid-out karesansui (dry landscape) garden, as well as the largest cave tomb in Kamakura, known as "yagura," are also highlights not to be missed.

Highlights

Every year during the hydrangea season, many flower admirers flock to the temple, creating a lively atmosphere. The temple is planted with various types of flowers, plants, and trees, providing beautiful scenery throughout the year. The stunning garden is also one of the highlights to enjoy.
