Located within Shikotsu-Toya National Park, Showa Shinzan was originally a wheat field that was uplifted due to the eruption of Mount Usu in Showa 18 (1943). Showa Shinzan is designated as a national special natural monument, as well as being recognized as one of Japan's Geological Heritage Sites, a Japanese Geopark, and a UNESCO Global Geopark, making it a volcano that attracts global attention.
This new volcano, formed in the 20th century, continues to exhibit volcanic activity, making it inaccessible for actual climbing, but one can feel the energy of the earth just by observing it.
The area around the foot of the mountain features attractions such as the Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch, the Mount Usu Ropeway, and the Masao Matsu Memorial Museum, along with numerous restaurants and souvenir shops, creating a vibrant tourist spot. By taking the Mount Usu Ropeway to the summit, visitors can enjoy a close-up view of the magnificent Showa Shinzan.

Getting There
Take the Do-Nan Bus from JR Muroran Main Line Toya Station towards Toyako Onsen for about 20 minutes. At the terminal, transfer to the Do-Nan Bus heading towards Showa Shinzan for about 15 minutes, and get off at the final stop (service suspended in winter).
