🗺️ Shukkeien Garden

📝 Introduction

The Japanese garden located in the center of Hiroshima City offers beautiful scenery to enjoy throughout the four seasons.

📖 Details

Shukkeien is a villa garden built by the first lord of the Hiroshima domain, Asano Nagamasa, in the 6th year of Genna (1620). After Hiroshima was devastated by the atomic bomb in 1945, it fell into ruins. Restoration of Shukkeien began in 1949, and after about 30 years of extensive reconstruction, the garden was finally able to regain its former appearance. At the center of the garden is the Chōin Pond, which features small islands called "Tsurushima" (鶴島) and "Kamejima" (亀島) that symbolize longevity. The pond's water is a natural mix of seawater and freshwater, known as "brackish water," which is suitable for marine life such as black sea bream, attracting wild birds that come here to forage and rest. Surrounding the pond are cleverly arranged tea houses, pavilions, artificial hills, streams, and small islands, all connected by a path around the pond. Visitors can stroll around the pond to enjoy the scenery, which is why it is referred to as a "strolling garden." The garden also features a hill called "Mikageyama" (迎暉峰) that mimics Mount Fuji, and climbing to the top offers a panoramic view of the entire park. The garden's scenery changes with the seasons, showcasing different landscapes. In spring, there are cherry blossoms and peach blossoms; in summer, lush green trees provide shade; in autumn, the beautiful red leaves of maple trees; and in winter, plum blossoms and camellias bloom. Additionally, every year during the cherry blossom and maple viewing seasons, lighting events are held.
