About Shukumen Street
In the nostalgic neighborhood, the sound of weaving from the Tango Shukumi still resonates.
Details
When it comes to pure silk, one must mention Taka in Kyoto, known for its chirimen (crepe silk). As a major production area for kimono silk fabrics, the chirimen street once thrived. The main houses, earthen storehouses, and chirimen factories built from the Edo period to the Meiji, Taisho, and early Showa periods are still preserved today, making the entire district feel like an open-air museum, full of charm.
The old Otofu family, which has been operating as a chirimen wholesaler for generations, plays a significant role in the financial sector of Taka and is currently open to the public, conveying the richness of past lives to modern people. Although the number of chirimen factories has significantly decreased compared to the past, some still continue to produce fabrics and offer tours.
The modernly designed Kayamachi Town Hall, built in 1929, underwent extensive renovations in 2019, including the restoration of the old council chamber on the second floor, reviving its former atmosphere. The Yosano Town Tourism Association is located within this building, where visitors can experience hand-weaving coasters or braiding. Reservations for tours of various chirimen factories or experiences wearing Taka chirimen can also be made here.
