About Shurijo Castle Park
Towards the path of reconstruction, a beautiful castle symbolizing the history and culture of Okinawa.
Details
Shuri Castle is the only red castle in Japan, featuring a vibrant and beautiful vermilion exterior. It is also a landmark of Okinawa. From 1429 to 1879, during the 450 years of the Ryukyu Kingdom, Shuri Castle served as the center of politics, diplomacy, and culture, showcasing grandeur and majesty. Located on a small hill overlooking Naha City, the castle's outer walls are designed with curves. It blends Chinese and Japanese castle-building cultures, employing unique architectural styles and stone construction techniques, holding significant cultural and historical value. In 2000, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
However, in 2019, a fire broke out, destroying eight buildings, including the main hall of Shuri Castle. This fire deeply affected many people's hearts, leading to a great deal of sorrow and tears. Nevertheless, with the support funds provided from both domestic and international sources, efforts towards reconstruction are now underway, and restoration activities are currently in progress. Since June 2020, paid areas have also begun to reopen.
