Sotomo is a sea erosion cave located on the northern coast of the Naka and Uwai Peninsula. The cliffs stretch for about 6 kilometers and feature numerous unique rock formations such as Hell Gate, Couple Turtle Rock, White Silk Waterfall, and Big Gate and Small Gate, along with scenic spots like caves and caverns, making it a designated national scenic area. The term "SOTOMO" originally referred to the area used by local fishermen, meaning "outside" or "back surface." During the Edo period, it was named with the kanji "蘇洞門," which has remained to this day.
To enjoy such a magnificent landscape, taking a sightseeing boat tour is the best option. The sightseeing boats departing from Wakasa Fisherman's Wharf take about 60 minutes to circle and view the natural beauty shaped by the turbulent waves of the Sea of Japan. Along the way, you will pass by the towering rocks resembling the Moai statues of Easter Island, the net-like cracked Net Hanging Rock, and the impressive Big Gate and Small Gate, which are connected by two arched doors. The comfortable sightseeing boats are equipped with air conditioning, allowing you to enjoy a relaxing moment.
Additionally, at the Wakasa Fisherman's Wharf, which serves as the base for exploring Sotomo, there are seafood restaurants, souvenir shops with the most comprehensive selection of Wakasa region products, as well as sashimi and sushi shops, allowing you to enjoy delicious food and shopping while taking in the breathtaking scenery.
