About Sumiyoshi Taisha

The head shrine of approximately 2,300 Sumiyoshi Shrines across Japan is famous for the "Sumiyoshi Matsuri," one of the three major summer festivals in Osaka, and as a prominent New Year's shrine in the Kansai region.

Details

Sumiyoshi Taisha is the head shrine of approximately 2,300 Sumiyoshi shrines across the country, revered by the public for enshrining deities associated with purification (the meaning of warding off evil and attracting good fortune), maritime safety, and poetry. The "Sumiyoshi Matsuri," held every summer, is one of the three major summer festivals in Osaka. People often say, "The summer festivals in Osaka begin with the Aizen Matsuri, followed by the Tenjin Matsuri, and conclude perfectly with the Sumiyoshi Matsuri." Sumiyoshi Taisha is also known nationwide as a prominent place for Hatsumode (the first shrine visit of the year) in the Kansai region. The shrine grounds cover approximately 30,000 tsubo and include four main halls and a total of 27 buildings, including smaller shrines known as sessha and massha. The first, second, and third main halls are arranged in a straight line, while the third and fourth main halls are aligned side by side. This architectural style is called "Sumiyoshi-zukuri," recognized as one of the oldest architectural concepts in the history of shrine construction. All four main halls have been designated as national treasures, with the existing main hall built in 1810. The shrine buildings undergo renovations every 20 years, and in conjunction with the 1,800th anniversary celebration of the deity's enshrinement, the "49th Shikinen Sengu" was held in 2011. There are many attractions within the shrine grounds worth appreciating. The "Takaibashi," commonly known as "Taiko Bridge," is about 20 meters long, 3.6 meters high, and 5.5 meters wide, with the steepest point reaching an angle of 48 degrees. It is said that merely crossing this bridge brings about the effect of "warding off evil and attracting good fortune." Additionally, at the energy spot called "Gosho Gozen," picking up stones inscribed with "Go," "Dai," and "Riki" is said to serve as a talisman that can grant wishes. At the popular attraction "Kizuneishi," after making a wish, if one lifts the stone twice and feels it lighter the second time, it is said that the wish will come true. There is also the "Sumiyoshi no Usagi," known as "Nuru Usagi," where one can pray for health and disaster relief by stroking the body of the rabbit.

Highlights

As the head shrine of approximately 2,300 Sumiyoshi Shrines nationwide, Sumiyoshi Taisha is famous throughout the country for its annual "Sumiyoshi Matsuri" and as a destination for Hatsumode (the first shrine visit of the year). The four main shrines of Sumiyoshi Taisha have all been designated as national treasures. The "Taiko Bridge," which has a steep incline of up to 48 degrees, is said to bring good fortune and ward off evil just by crossing it. At the energy spot "Goshomisen," it is believed that picking up designated stones can make wishes come true. The "Kizuki Stone" within the shrine grounds is also a very popular attraction.
