About Tachibana Family of Yanagawa Domain - Onohana (Famous Spot)
The landmark that has passed down the history of Yanagawa to this day is the nationally designated scenic spot "Shōtōen," which is breathtakingly beautiful!
Details
Located in the southern part of Fukuoka Prefecture, Yanagawa City has been under the rule of the Tachibana family since 1587, when Tachibana Muneshige entered the castle on the orders of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In the mid-Edo period, the 5th lord of the domain, Tachibana Sadatsugu, built a private residence named "Ohan" here.
During the Meiji era, the Tachibana family was granted the title of count, and under the 14th head, Tachibana Kanji, they gradually constructed various buildings such as "Shotoen," "Seiyokan," "Daihiro," "Okiya," "Kaseikyoku," and "Keibi-sho," which have been preserved to this day.
The entire 7,000 tsubo area has been designated as a national scenic spot. Within the area, there are many noteworthy places to visit, including the "Seiyokan," built in 1910 as a guesthouse, and the "Tachibana Family Historical Museum," which displays valuable historical materials of the Tachibana family. The elegant pond garden "Shotoen," surrounded by black pines, is breathtaking and has also been designated as a national scenic spot. Visitors can enjoy the view of the garden from the "Daihiro," which features 100 tatami mats.
Additionally, there are restaurants where you can enjoy Yanagawa's specialty steamed eel, local cuisine made with fresh seafood from the Ariake Sea, and seasonal kaiseki dishes, as well as exquisite guest rooms for accommodation. It is recommended to stay at a landmark in Yanagawa and slowly immerse yourself in the cultural experience.
