🗺️ Tajimi City Mosaic Tile Museum多治見市モザイクタイルミュージアム

The so-called mosaic tiles refer to small tiles with a surface area of less than 50 square centimeters. The city of Tajimi, specifically Kasahara-cho, which produces the most mosaic tiles in the country, established the Mosaic Tile Museum in 2016. The unique building, with its earthen walls rising from a sunken ground, was designed by the internationally renowned architect Terunobu Fujimori. Upon entering the museum, it is recommended to first ascend the large staircase designed like an earthen tunnel to the fourth floor. From the fourth floor, visitors can gradually descend and carefully appreciate the various exhibits. The exhibition room on the fourth floor mainly introduces mosaic tiles selected by Terunobu Fujimori from a vast collection. This floor presents a magical space filled with a variety of mosaic tile products and tile artworks. Next, on the third floor, there is an exhibition room that explores the history of the tile-making process. The attached gallery holds about three planned exhibitions each year. The second floor features an exhibition room that provides the latest information on tiles. Additionally, the first floor includes a hands-on workshop and a museum shop. In the workshop, visitors can create their own original items through free collage, which is a very popular hands-on experience (reservation required).

The uniquely designed building is quite eye-catching. The fourth floor features a mosaic tile display space curated by Terunobu Fujimori, which is definitely worth a visit. The third floor introduces the tile-making process and history in a simple and easy-to-understand manner. The experience workshop and museum shop are also not to be missed.
