About Takamatsu Jin'ya
The only major building from the Edo period in Japan that has been preserved to this day is the daikansho (代官所).
Details
Takayama Jinya was a place where officials such as daikan (local magistrates) and gun-dai (district magistrates) carried out administrative duties during the Edo period. It consisted of government offices, residences for officials and their subordinates, and warehouses. In the 5th year of Genroku (1692), Hida became a territory directly governed by the Tokugawa shogunate, and for the following 176 years, the daikan and gun-dai dispatched from Edo executed the administration of Hida at Takayama Jinya.
It is said that during the late Edo period, there were about 60 jinya across the country, but to this day, only Takayama Jinya remains as a major building from that time, which is why it has been designated as a national historic site.
Each building within Takayama Jinya can be said to have weathered the test of time. After passing through the main gate, rebuilt in the 3rd year of Tenpo (1832), visitors can find a reception room adorned with the eye-catching "Aonami" pattern, as well as various notable areas such as the official office (Oyakusho), local official office (Goyojō), hall (Ōhiroba), official residence (Yakutaku), and court (Oshirakushū). Additionally, one can see the oldest and largest Edo period rice granary in the country, known as "Okura."
*Note: Daikan - local officials of shogunate-controlled territories; Gun-dai - similar to daikan but with a larger area of jurisdiction and a higher rank; Daikan-sho - the place where daikan and gun-dai carry out administrative duties; Yaku-sho - official office.
Highlights
The office and official residence of the daikan (district magistrate) and gun-dai (county magistrate) dispatched from Edo, responsible for handling the governance of Hida.
