About Takaoka Great Buddha

You can closely observe the bronze Great Buddha, known as "Japan's number one handsome man."

Details

The Takaoka Great Buddha is a symbol of the Takaoka region, known for its bronze casting, which is the best in Japan. The approximately 16-meter tall seated statue of Amida Nyorai embodies the essence of local bronze casting techniques. It is listed as one of Japan's three great Buddhas and is renowned for its beautiful features, earning the title of "Japan's Most Handsome Man." The Takaoka Great Buddha is located within the grounds of Daibutsu-ji Temple and is said to have been created around 800 years ago. After experiencing multiple periods of neglect and threats from fires, it was rebuilt to take on its present form. Illuminated at sunset, it showcases a dreamlike silhouette in the night. According to legend, the Great Buddha was originally constructed by Minamoto no Yoshikatsu as a means of escaping the Jōkyū War, with the wooden Buddha being built on Mount Futagami to the northwest of Takaoka City. In 1609, the second lord of the Kaga Domain, Maeda Toshinaga, relocated it to its current position. The 15th generation monk, who lamented the long neglect of the Great Buddha, rebuilt it as a golden wooden statue. The current statue was reconstructed in 1933, and based on the experiences of the first and second Great Buddhas being destroyed by fire, it was decided to create it in bronze rather than wood. Under the pedestal of the Takaoka Great Buddha, there are statues of the three Amida and various Buddhas, which are open for public viewing. The walls of the corridor display 13 Buddhist paintings made from the canvas of the revered Takaoka sacred cedar, which is a must-see attraction.
