About Takatori Castle Ruins

It is listed among Japan's top 100 castles and is one of Japan's three great mountain castles, making it one of the most renowned castle ruins in Japan.

Details

Takatori Castle Ruins is located in Takatori Town, in the central part of Nara Prefecture. It is said that this mountain castle was built by the local feudal lord Ochi during the Nanboku-chō period. During the Azuchi-Momoyama period, it was renovated and expanded by Honda, a retainer of the Toyotomi clan, becoming a mountain castle of unprecedented scale. The elevation difference between the castle town at the foot of the mountain and the main keep is 446 meters, making it the greatest elevation difference among modern Japanese castles. It is also one of the most famous castles in the country, designated as a national historic site and recognized as one of Japan's top 100 castles by the Japan Castle Association. Additionally, it is ranked as one of Japan's three great mountain castles, alongside Bitchū Matsuyama Castle in Okayama Prefecture and Minō Iwamura Castle in Gifu Prefecture. The greatest charm of Takatori Castle lies in the stone walls and stone terraces that are stacked throughout the mountain. Although the buildings have mostly disappeared, many stone walls and terraces remain, telling the story of its former grandeur. Moreover, the breathtaking view from the site of the Kunimi Yagura is a highlight that can only be seen at Japan's highest elevation mountain castle. On clear days, one can even enjoy a distant view of the urban landscape of the Keihanshin area.
