Beppu Onsen is a collective term for the hot springs scattered throughout Beppu City, and it is one of the popular Beppu Eight Hot Springs. The city has many public baths and ryokans, making soaking in hot springs a major pleasure in the daily lives of local residents.
Among the numerous public baths in Beppu, "Takegawara Onsen" is the most famous, having become a symbol of Beppu Onsen. Established in 1879, Takegawara Onsen features a luxurious gabled roof and has a grand appearance; the current building was reconstructed in 1938. The nostalgic lobby retains the look of the early Showa period, with a high ceiling and spacious layout, allowing guests to relax here while watching television or reading magazines after their soak.
The bathhouse is traditionally designed in a semi-basement style, exuding a strong historical atmosphere. There are several types of hot spring waters available; the men's bath primarily features chloride springs, while the women's bath includes bicarbonate springs, among others. However, there are no shower facilities in the regular bathhouse, so please use wooden tubs to wash your body.
The facility also includes a sand bath area (shared by both men and women), where guests can enjoy being buried in fine sand heated by the hot spring's thermal energy, promoting sweating and detoxification. Reservations for the sand bath cannot be made by phone or online; tickets can be purchased directly at the counter on the day of your visit. The sand bath is very popular, and entry is limited, so it is recommended to buy tickets early.
