From JR Kure Station, you can cross the Onado Bridge and the Hayase Bridge to connect to Kure City’s Ketsukuri Port, along the approximately 70-kilometer cycling route known as "Kakido Island Coastal Road." This well-maintained cycling path along the coast allows riders to enjoy the refreshing sea breeze while experiencing the joy of cycling amidst rich nature, making it increasingly popular among cyclists in recent years.
The cycling route also features many must-visit attractions. After departing from Kure City, you can head to Onado Seto Park, which offers beautiful cherry blossoms in spring and azaleas in summer, where you can enjoy the tranquil scenery of ferries traveling between Onado Bridge and the strait. Next, you can visit Kurahashi Island, which was frequented by the envoys to Tang Dynasty China. The "Nagato Shipbuilding History Museum" displays a full-size replica of the envoy ship, which is definitely worth a visit. On Etajima Island, you can also visit the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's First Technical School (formerly the Naval Academy), which is open for free tours.
