About Tama Zoological Park (多摩動物公園)
A zoo where you can see the "skywalk" performance of orangutans and observe various animals from a lion bus!
Details
Tama Zoo covers more than 50 hectares and is one of the largest zoos in the world in terms of area. It is home to over 300 species of animals, ranging from ants to elephants. Located in the Tama Hills, walking through the park feels like strolling in a vast natural park, which is very refreshing.
The zoo is divided into four sections: the Asia area, Africa area, Australia area, and the Insect area. One of the features of Tama Zoo is its emphasis on allowing visitors to observe animals in a setting that resembles their natural habitat. Therefore, the park minimizes the use of fences and cages, instead housing animals in open spaces surrounded by ditches.
Tama Zoo is also a pioneer in introducing the "Lion Bus" and "Insect Ecology Garden" to the world. Additionally, the park has a Wildlife Protection Center dedicated to the breeding and conservation of rare animals, such as the Japanese Crested Ibis (朱鷺) and the White Crane (白鶴).
Highlights
The performance of the orangutan on a steel wire about 15 meters high and 150 meters long, known as "tightrope walking," is very popular (canceled in rainy weather). The park is spacious and offers free shuttle buses for visitors to move around the area. Tama Zoo (多摩動物園) is also committed to the breeding and protection of various endangered animals.
