About Tendo City Shogi Museum
The symbolic attraction of Tendo, the "Shogi Capital," allows visitors to understand the history of Japanese shogi.
Details
With the outstanding performance of Sōta Fujii, the shogi world has also sparked a wave of excitement. Tendo City produces over 90% of shogi pieces, making it a sacred place for shogi. The square and pathways are designed with shogi puzzles, and there are decorations of shogi on bridges and manhole covers.
Located on the first floor of Tendo Station, the Tendo City Shogi Museum showcases a 25×25 grid, 354-piece Tai Shogi, and the ancient Chaturanga from North India, where shogi originated, making it a must-visit. The museum features various pieces made by craftsmen, with the pieces used in title matches being particularly expensive. The museum shop offers many shogi-themed products, making it the best choice for souvenirs. Next to the museum, the Tendo Shogi Exchange Room allows for free play, helping to promote the popularity of shogi.
In April, the "Tendo Cherry Blossom Festival" is one of the liveliest festivals in Tendo City. A highlight is the "Human Shogi," where professional players dress in armor or kimono and portray shogi pieces, which is a sight not to be missed.
