🗺️ The Curved House in Minami-gō, Numata City沼田市南鄉曲屋

The Kurukawa House in Minami-gō, Numata City, is the residence of the Suzuki family, who have served as local lords (Note: a class responsible for managing tribute and other important duties under the feudal lord) for generations in this area. It is said that the building was completed in 1785, and it still retains four storage buildings and a waterwheel house centered around the main house, which has been designated as an important cultural asset of Numata City. The main house features a rare thatched roof in the Kurukawa style, which is uncommon in the Kanto region, with an L-shaped protrusion that was historically used as a stable. Upon entering the house, one can see a large hearth, and in the back, there are impressive seats that reflect the style of a samurai residence. To clearly indicate differences in status, the seating arrangement has distinct height differences, with the highest position at the back being reserved for the guest of honor. Traditionally, the seats just below the guest of honor's position are for those of similar status. Here, visitors can not only engage with history through the architecture but also experience making soba noodles, dumplings, and straw crafts, among other activities. Experiencing the customs passed down in this land and the lifestyle of past eras is part of the charm of this facility. When visiting, it is highly recommended not to miss out on these experiences.
