About The National Museum of Western Art (国立西洋美術館)
Part of the building has been selected as a World Heritage site and has attracted much attention! Designed by Le Corbusier, the museum is a treasure trove of Western art.
Details
The National Museum of Western Art is located in the lush Ueno Park and, as its name suggests, specializes in the display of Western art. Its origins trace back to the "Matsukata Collection," which was donated and returned by the French government. The museum features Impressionist works by artists such as Renoir, Van Gogh, and Monet, as well as works by Picasso and a collection of French art predominantly featuring sculptures by Rodin. In addition to these, the permanent exhibition also showcases works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, along with donated and loaned pieces. In 1997, an exhibition planning building was constructed, which collaborates with newspapers to hold approximately three joint exhibitions annually, displaying works lent from museums in Europe and the United States.
Beyond the collection itself, the building is also of significant artistic value. The main building, which was completed in 1959, was designed by Le Corbusier. In July 2016, the components associated with the National Museum of Western Art were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list as "The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier – A Significant Contribution to the Modern Movement in Architecture."
