About Toden Memories Square
Visit two precious vintage cars from the peak era of the Tokyo Electric Railway.
Details
The Toden Nostalgia Square is located within the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation's "Arakawa Tram Depot" (Arakawa Shako). In a space reminiscent of nostalgic tram stops, it preserves and displays two carriages that once operated on the Toden lines, open for free visits only on weekends.
The first displayed carriage is the 5500 series (car number 5501), manufactured in Showa 29 (1954), which was used on the 1 line from Shinagawa Station to Ueno Station. It was made using the latest streetcar technology imported from the United States, featuring a unique streamlined body. With high performance such as low noise and high acceleration, it is also known as the "PCC CAR." Inside the freely accessible carriage, there is a simulated driver's cab and an operation panel, a three-dimensional model of the Tokyo Sakura Tram (Toden Arakawa Line), as well as display cases of historical materials.
The second carriage is a rare double-light design, an old 7500 series (car number 7504) manufactured in Showa 37 (1962). Before its retirement, it was used to transport students during peak hours, earning the nickname "Gakuen-go" (School Car). The orange body paired with deep blue stripes gives it a retro feel. Standing in front of these two iconic cars from the peak of the Toden era, one can immerse themselves in a nostalgic atmosphere.
