About Toko Sake Brewery
The largest sake brewery museum in the Tohoku region.
Details
Toko Sake Brewery's Kojima Main Store is a long-established sake manufacturer that has been in operation since the Azuchi-Momoyama period. It is one of the few sake breweries that existed before the Edo period, having developed from the official sake brewery of the Yonezawa domain's Uesugi clan. Today, it continues to brew fine sake using the unique terroir of Yonezawa.
The sake museum is housed in a warehouse-style building that has been renovated from an early sake brewing facility. The spacious interior showcases the traditional methods of Japanese sake production and offers audio guides to help visitors learn about various types of sake. There are also many precious exhibits, including sake vessels such as Tokkuri and various brewing tools. The rows of wooden barrels, which are taller than an adult, served as a filming location for a cosmetics advertisement by Tom Hooper.
In the attached sake shop, visitors can taste and purchase Toko Sake Brewery's limited edition sake. Additionally, skincare products made with a unique extract from sake lees are also available for sale.
Highlights
A sake museum with a solid warehouse structure. The rows of wooden barrels over 1.8 meters tall inside the brewery are quite spectacular. You can also taste samples at the direct sales store.
