About Tokugawa Garden
Appreciate the changing natural scenery of the four seasons in a Japanese garden with a pond and strolling path.
Details
In 1695, the second lord of the Owari Domain, Mitsutomo, built a retreat called "Ozone Residence." Tokugawaen is a Japanese garden constructed on the former site of this residence, covering an area of approximately 130,000 tsubo (about 44 hectares).
Tokugawaen is the most popular style of pond and stroll garden among the daimyo gardens of the Edo period. The way clear water flows into the pond is likened to a pristine stream cascading down a waterfall into a valley and then into the sea, symbolically representing Japan's natural landscape.
Tokugawaen makes excellent use of its varied topography, allowing visitors to enjoy a landscape full of changes and a sense of presence, which is a significant feature. It also recreates the waterfall from the former Edo residence of the Owari Tokugawa family—"Ryūmon Falls," which increases its water flow every 20 minutes, along with many thoughtful designs that bring joy to visitors. A Chinese-style stone bridge stands within the garden, and the sight of koi gracefully swimming in Ryōsen Lake is a must-capture photo for any album.
In spring, peonies bloom, and in early summer, irises can be admired, showcasing seasonal flowers throughout the year. Particularly during the maple leaf season, the garden is adorned with delicate bright reds, and at night, there are lantern events to enjoy the autumn foliage.
