📖 Details

The Tokyo National Museum opened in 1872 and is the oldest museum in Japan. The museum consists of six exhibition halls: the Main Building (Japanese Art), the Toyokan (Asian Art), the Horyuji Temple Treasure Hall, the Heiseikan, the Hyokeikan, and the Kuroda Memorial Hall. It mainly houses artworks and archaeological artifacts related to Japanese and other Eastern cultures, with a collection exceeding 120,000 items. Among these, there are 89 national treasures and 646 important cultural properties. The exhibitions are primarily divided into two parts: the Comprehensive Cultural Exhibition (permanent exhibition) and Special Exhibitions (themed exhibitions). The Comprehensive Cultural Exhibition includes items from the museum's collection as well as treasures stored in shrines and temples; the Special Exhibitions feature large-scale thematic displays held approximately 3 to 5 times a year.
