About Tokyo Shin-Otani Hotel Japanese Garden
Standing in the city center, the Japanese garden is filled with the charm of the Edo period.
Details
The garden at "Shin-Otani Hotel" has a history of over 400 years. According to historical records, this site was once the residence of the samurai Kato Kiyomasa during the early Edo period, as well as the garden of the Ii family, which held significant power during the Edo shogunate. Today, it serves as the garden of the Shin-Otani Hotel, open for free to both guests and non-guests.
This pond-style strolling Japanese garden spans an impressive 10,000 tsubo (approximately half the area of the hotel). Surrounding the large pond, various landscapes are created with small islands, bridges, and notable stones, allowing visitors to stroll along the pond's edge while enjoying the beautiful scenery. Highlights include the "Seisen Pond," where white herons and ducks glide, the "Taiko Bridge" contrasting with the lush garden, and the "Great Waterfall," which stands 6 meters tall, all creating breathtaking views that make one feel as if they are in the midst of a bustling city.
After sunset, the garden is illuminated, revealing a different charm than during the day. The lighting design for the garden was crafted by Mikako Ishii, the designer behind the lighting for Tokyo Tower and Rainbow Bridge, and there are lighting events held throughout the year.
