About Towada-Hachimantai National Park

Preserve the untouched original natural beauty of Northeast, along with numerous famous hot springs.

Details

A magnificent national park spanning the mountainous regions of Aomori Prefecture, Iwate Prefecture, and Akita Prefecture. It mainly consists of two areas: the "Towada-Hakkoda Area," which includes the famous scenic spots of the Oirase Stream, Lake Towada, and Mount Hakkoda, and the "Hachimantai Area," which features Mount Iwate and Akita Komagatake, among others. In the "Towada-Hakkoda Area," visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk along the clear Oirase Stream, which attracts travelers with its mysterious scenery, as well as Lake Towada, the only double caldera lake in Japan. Additionally, Mount Hakkoda is renowned for its beautiful frost-covered trees, making it one of Japan's top scenic destinations. The Hachimantai Area is a well-known volcanic region in Japan. The "Aspite Line," a snow corridor that spans Iwate and Akita, is famous for its towering snow walls, which can reach up to about 8 meters in height and are open for self-driving from late April to mid-May. Mount Iwate, affectionately known as "Nanbu Fuji," is beloved by locals and mountain enthusiasts nationwide, while the rare alpine plants found at the altitude of 1,637 meters on the active volcano Akita Komagatake are also a highlight worth appreciating. With beautiful and pleasant landscapes in every season—spring greenery, early summer flower fields, autumn foliage, and winter snow scenes—both areas offer travelers a fresh emotional experience no matter when they visit. The various hot springs gifted by the volcanoes are also incredibly appealing.
