About Uesugi Museum, Yonezawa City
Show historical materials related to the Uesugi clan.
Details
Yonezawa is a castle town governed by the Uesugi family, whose ancestor was the warlord Uesugi Kenshin from the Sengoku period. Many great figures, including the renowned lord Uesugi Yozan from the Edo period, left their mark on this land. Centered around the ruins of Yonezawa Castle, the area is dotted with attractions deeply connected to the Uesugi family, including the family's mausoleum.
At the Yonezawa City Uesugi Museum, located at the site of the second bailey of Yonezawa Castle, materials related to the Uesugi family are displayed. The highlight of the museum is the "Uesugi Hon Raku-chu Raku-gai Zu Byobu," a folding screen said to have been gifted to Uesugi Kenshin by Oda Nobunaga in the second year of Tenshō (1574). The original is displayed only during specific periods, while replicas are shown at other times. The artwork intricately depicts the four seasons of Kyoto and the daily lives of its people, created by Kanō Eitoku, and was designated as a national treasure in Heisei 7 (1995).
Additionally, the museum showcases the first samurai document to be designated as a national treasure, the "Uesugi Family Documents," along with books and other items related to Uesugi Yozan.
Highlights
The museum located at the site of the Ni-no-Maru of Yonezawa Castle houses a wealth of materials related to the Uesugi family. The designated national treasure, the "Uesugi Hon Raku-chu Raku-gai Zu Byobu" (屏風), can only be viewed during a limited period.
