Wakkanai Station is a stop on the JR Sōya Main Line, which is the northernmost point in Japan. It is about a 20-minute drive from Wakkanai Airport, 2 minutes from the ferry terminal, and approximately 40 minutes by car to Cape Sōya, the northernmost point of Japan. The station serves as a base for sightseeing in Wakkanai, with route buses, Sapporo city buses, and regular sightseeing buses available to the bus transfer station in front of the station. Additionally, there is a roadside rest area called Wakkanai, which is the northernmost roadside rest area in all of Japan.
In addition to the platform, there is a signpost marking "Japan's Northernmost Station," and from the ticket gate, you can see the sign for "Northernmost Railway" located behind the railway buffer stop. In front of the station, there are displays of early railway equipment and buffer stops used as decorations, making it a popular photo spot for tourists.
Inside the station, there are shops selling local Wakkanai products, cafes, and restaurants, as well as a complex facility called "KITAcolor," which combines a movie theater with a convenience store. There is also a tourist information area and a tourist association within the station, making it convenient to use even if you are not taking a train.
