Wakakari Park is located within the "Seto National Park" at the northern tip of Kyushu, on the Kyushu side of the Kanmon Straits, covering an area of approximately 37 hectares and offering distant views of Honshu, Japan. The area around the ancient Jo Mountain, where the ruins of Moji Castle are located, has been organized and planned as a park, extending to the waterfront area.
In addition to the observation deck that overlooks the turbulent Kanmon Straits, the majestic Kanmon Bridge, and the passing ships, there are many exciting attractions such as a rare saltwater swimming pool that is only open in summer, a 3-meter high and 44-meter long Arita porcelain mural that recreates the Genpei War, and "Norfolk Square" and "Wakakari Shrine," named after sister cities.
To reach the park, you can take the retro sightseeing train "Shio Kaze" of the Moji Port Retro Sightseeing Train, which passes by stations such as "Kyushu Railway Memorial Museum Station," "Norfolk Square Station," and "Kanmon Straits Wakakari Station" near Moji Port.
In particular, the night view of the Kanmon Straits, which spans Honshu and Kyushu, is spectacular and was recognized as a "Japan Night View Heritage" in 2020. The brightly lit Kanmon Bridge and the scenic old streets of Moji Port and Shimonoseki are beautiful. Additionally, many people come to Hibiki-nada to enjoy the sunset.
