About White Beard Waterfall
A 30-meter high waterfall pours into a cobalt blue river, showcasing different scenery in each season.
Details
The Shirahige Waterfall is one of the representative tourist attractions of the "Biei Platinum Onsen Street." The waterfall, resembling a white beard, cascades from a 30-meter high cliff into the Biei River. It is a rare type of waterfall in Japan known as a "subterranean waterfall," where groundwater flows down through the crevices of the rock wall.
The water flowing from Tokachidake contains unique volcanic components that affect light reflection, giving the surface of the Biei River a cobalt blue glow. The majestic scene of the white waterfall pouring into the Biei River is breathtaking. The vibrant greenery of summer and the red foliage of autumn make the changing seasonal landscapes worth seeing. Among these, the winter scenery of the waterfall flowing from the black rock wall against the backdrop of white snow is particularly spectacular.
The Hakugin Bridge (Blue River Bridge), which spans the river, is the best viewing spot for the waterfall. At night, lights illuminate the area, creating a dreamlike scene that is completely different from the daytime view. Just a 5-minute drive away is the popular scenic spot "Hakugin Aoi-ike," which is worth visiting as well.
