About White Dragon Garden

Open for visits only during the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons, located in the Japanese garden on Mount Kurama.

Details

Bairyu-en is located in Kurama and Kibune in Kyoto Prefecture, at the foot of Mount Anyouji in Ni-no-se. Covering a vast area of approximately 15,000 tsubo, it features a beautiful Japanese garden that harmonizes with nature. The garden, which opened in Showa 38 (1963), is owned by the Kyoto clothing manufacturer "Aono Co., Ltd." The founder of the company purchased nearby land and, after learning about local legends, decided to rejuvenate the barren mountains and create Bairyu-en. Within the garden, there is a torii gate that enshrines the god of longevity and immortality, "Shiramine no Okami," and the god of prosperous business, "Hachidai Ryuuou." Created without the help of a horticulturist, the garden was developed with the assistance of company employees, their families, and local residents. It features stone steps covered in moss, a vermilion taiko bridge, and five uniquely designed pavilions. Visitors can enjoy the scenery that feels like stepping into another world, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, as the seasons change. The garden is generally not open to the public, but during the cherry blossom season in spring and the autumn foliage season, it opens to only 100 visitors each day, requiring prior reservation. Besides these special opening periods, the garden is also available for private tea ceremonies and photography rentals.
