About Xianglan Creek

About 4,000 red and yellow maple trees are densely clustered, showcasing the stunning beauty of the valley.

Details

Located in the Bachuan Valley, 香嵐溪 (Kōrankei) is one of Japan's top destinations for viewing autumn leaves. It is said that in the 11th year of the Kan'ei era (1634), a monk from 香積寺 (Kōjaku-ji) planted trees here, and there are now about 4,000 trees. In autumn, they turn vibrant shades of red and yellow, showcasing the stunning beauty of the valley. Every year from November 1 to 30, the "香嵐溪紅葉祭" (Kōrankei Momiji Matsuri) is held for a month. Various activities are organized based on the annual theme, bringing different joys to visiting tourists. One of the highlights is the nighttime illumination from sunset until 9 PM. The autumn leaves, illuminated by lights, create a dreamlike scenery that leaves a deep impression on every visitor. Not only in autumn, but also in spring with wildflowers, early summer with fresh greenery, and winter with snowy landscapes, each season offers different charming views. The 片栗花 (Katakuri) that bloom from mid to late March are particularly famous, and the breathtaking sea of purple flowers is also not to be missed.
