Yabakei in Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture, is known as one of Japan's "Three Great Scenic Spots," alongside Myogi Mountain in Gunma Prefecture and Kankakei in Shodoshima. It is part of the Yaba-Hita-Hikosan Quasi-National Park, which spans Oita, Fukuoka, and Kumamoto Prefectures, and has been selected as one of Japan's "New Three Views."
The valley primarily extends along the Yamakuni River, which flows through Nakatsu City, with its middle reaches and tributaries. In the vast area of approximately 32 kilometers north to south and 36 kilometers east to west, there are several scenic spots such as "Hon-Yabakei" and "Shin-Yabakei." The Yamakuni River has eroded the lava plateau over the years, creating strange rocks and cliffs, caves, and streams, resulting in a landscape filled with mystery.
Yabakei is also famous as one of Japan's three major spots for autumn foliage, with the "Ichimoku Hakkai" observation platform located in the center of Shin-Yabakei offering a panoramic view of the vibrant red maple leaves, making it extremely popular. Take the Oita Kotsu bus from JR Nippo Main Line "Nakatsu" Station for about 1 hour and 30 minutes (including transfer time) to the bus stop "Shin-Yabakei Onsen" (for Ichimoku Hakkai).
