About Yamamoto Roman Catholic Church
The oldest church in Japanese history, the beauty of the Blue Cathedral and its solemn atmosphere are truly awe-inspiring.
Details
The building of Motomachi Roman Catholic Church was constructed in 1859 by the French missionary Mermet de Cashon when he arrived in Hakodate, and it was later rebuilt in 1910. It adopts the Gothic architectural style of the 12th century, characterized by its tall bell tower that stands 33 meters high. Along with the Roman Catholic churches in Yokohama and Nagasaki, it is one of the oldest churches in Japan.
Upon entering the sanctuary, one is greeted by the high ceiling and sharp arches. The gray-blue ceiling, a blend of gray and blue, is adorned with silver multi-pointed stars. The beauty of the cathedral, with its relief sculptures of the Passion and stained glass, is truly admirable. The main altar, side altar, and the entire set of sculptures in the center of the cathedral were gifted by Pope Benedict XV, which adds to the solemn atmosphere, and all of these were crafted by renowned Italian workshops known for their significant cultural heritage value.
